Hello my beloved German apostates. I’d thought I’d share my book with you. I’m not savvy enough to translate it into Deutsch but for those who read English, you might get something out of it.

2022.01.22 19:57 russbird Could Tether (and other stables coins) cause Bitcoin (and other cryptos) to crash?

I'm not looking to spread FUD here, but I saw this article posted on technology a couple of days ago, and was surprised that it didn't make its way over here.
The TLDR is essentially that Bitcoin is more expensive to mine (via electricity usage and hardware costs) than its actual value (arguable, in my opinion), but more importantly that the corporate parent of Tether has been manipulating the price of Bitcoin with un-backed money for years.
The Jacobin article is clearly slanted anti-crypto, but they make a decent argument for why Tether is completely untrustworthy (something I think this sub already agrees with) and how a bank-run on Tether could bring down Bitcoin and the whole marketplace. From the article (it's a long read so I tried to grab only the pertinent portions):
"...researchers attributed over half of the then-recent rise in Bitcoin’s price to purchases made by a single entity on Bitfinex, a cryptocurrency exchange headquartered in Hong Kong and registered in the Virgin Islands. These purchases were timed to buoy the price of Bitcoin during market downturns in a way that so strongly indicated market manipulation, the authors found it inconceivable that such trading patterns could occur by happenstance...
...Critically, these purchases were not made with dollars, but with Tether, another type of cryptocurrency known as a “stablecoin”...
...Bitfinex, which shares a parent company and executive team with Tether Ltd (the issuer of its namesake cryptocurrency), struggled to find US banking partners...
...Tether has become integral to the functioning of global crypto markets. The majority of Bitcoin trades are now conducted in Tether, 70 percent by volume. By comparison, only 8 percent of trade volume is conducted in real dollars, with the remainder being other crypto-to-crypto pairs...
...Should faith in Tether falter, we could see its peg to the dollar collapse in a flash. This would be a doomsday scenario for crypto markets, with investors holding or trading crypto assets on unbanked exchanges unable to “cash” out...
...Tether supply has been growing exponentially for years, exploding during crypto market bull runs and continuing straight through years-long downturns. There are now over 78 billion tethers in circulation and rising, about 95 percent of which was issued since the latest cryptocurrency bull market started in early 2020...
...Unbacked stablecoins can and are being used to inflate the “spot price” — the latest trading price — of cryptocurrencies to levels totally disconnected from reality. But the electricity costs of running and securing blockchains is very real. If cryptocurrency markets cannot keep luring in enough new money to cover the growing costs of mining, the scheme will become unworkable and financially insolvent."
I'm not entirely convinced by the conclusion here, I don't think that miners are all going to suddenly want to cash out and find there isn't enough liquidity available to do so. But I am concerned that un-backed stablecoins like Tether are able to influence the market in unsustainable ways, the "Ponzi Scheme" mentioned in the article's title.
I know that the "flippening" with USDT and USDC is happening, but is that enough to remove the Tether timebomb from crypto altogether? I'm in this for the long run and I'd like a better understanding of the risks. Thoughts?

2022.01.22 19:57 cafespeed21 Jade Cargill Appreciation Thread

I wanted to post this after the much better than expected match against Ana Jay on Rampage but Jade Cargill has really come into her own recently.
She’s a low key good powerhouses wrestler with some strong psychology for someone with her experience and she had a run of good to great matches on Rampage recently against Thunder Rosa, the Triple Threat match and now Jay.
My previous thought was that she was outshined by Ruby Soho but she has been extremely impressive in her own right recently. I would imagine she would have had a PPV Title match at this point if she had been featured more.

2022.01.22 19:57 squirrelgal644 Stolen Coat at the NCRB

Someone took my partner's coat from the men's locker room at the NCRB sometime between 3:30 and 4:45 today. His car keys were in the coat. I know it's a nice coat, and maybe they took it on accident, but if they did steal it, it's such an incredibly shitty thing to do. He worked to pay for the coat, and it's cold outside. We've contacted DPSS and they're reviewing the footage, but honestly, I don't know what will come of that. Any other options?
